Mommy and Me Toddler Costume: Frida Kahlo

I have a tendency to make even simple things complicated. It’s not the best of habits. But things were so crazy leading up to this year’s Halloween that I decided to try something out of character and go simple with Ellie’s halloween costume and use things we already had.

I picked up this little Mexican dress on a trip to Cabo with Chris before we were even pregnant. That’s how sure I was that we were going to have a girl. 🙂 It’s a size “1” but she only ever wore it once and it seemed to still fit her.

IMG_2400Add some of Mama’s jewelry, a colorful scarf, some flower clips and Frida’s infamous unibrow and voila – we have ourselves a 2-year-old Frida Kahlo!

I was a very last minute addition. We were going to a friend’s neighborhood to trick or treat and Chris wanted to wear an old skeleton costume so I had to think fast…oh, I can be Frida’s self portrait! A patterned sun dress, shawl, roses in my hair – and the unibrow – and I was set and ready to be painted.

It couldn’t have been easier to put together and we got a ton of compliments. Ellie was even pretty darn cute saying “I Frida Kahlo! A Mexican Painter!”

Chris’s skeleton getup ended up accidentally working in theme…sort of. Pain and mortality were always themes of Frida’s art…so he could represent that, in case anyone asked (they didn’t). creative family halloween costume
