We celebrated Ellie’s first and second birthdays at the house with some fun themes (a lemonade stand and “two-two” party). This year, with a new baby sister at home, we thought getting OUT of the house would be a better bet. For her third birthday celebration, we had a fun “birthday at the bay” party. Mission Bay in San Diego is our “happy place” and so we thought it would be perfect to share with friends and family for Ellie’s special day.
We kept everything pretty simple. Organic snacks from Costco and a hired juice truck that served smoothies, juices and acai bowls with organic, locally sourced ingredients. When the truck first pulled up, Ellie screamed “A juice truck!? Just for ME!????” We renamed the menu using all nicknames for Ellie, which she just barely seemed to appreciate.
To “balance” the juice truck, I made a little donut tower for dessert and stuck a candle in one for Ellie to blow out. I’m not sure if she had ever had a donut before – but I’m sure it won’t be her last.
We rented a lily pad for the kids. I wasn’t sure how it would go over with 3 year olds but they had a blast. We kept it attached to shore most of the time and would take it out on a ride now and then. The water was shallow enough for the kiddos to stand pretty far out.
Party favors were little kites that all the kids opened and enjoyed immediately. It was pretty fun to watch.
I still can’t believe we have a THREE year old. But she reminds me of it every day so I’ll wrap my head around it soon enough. Happy Birthday Ellie!!
