Best Natural Facial Sunscreens

safe facial sunscreen

I recently wrote about why deodorant is one of my “nontoxic non-negotiables” and the other big one for me is SUNSCREEN. Keep the chemical crap far far away from this family! Below I share the three best natural facial sunscreens, with only the best, clean ingredients to keep you protected.

Cases of melanoma have tripled in the past 35 years, yet harmful ingredients and untrue marketing claims (i.e. high SPF numbers) are still not being regulated properly. It is critical that you understand the ingredients in your sunscreen before you buy – or apply. Here is a link to the Environmental Working Group’s 2016 Guide to Sunscreen.

“Almost three-fourths of the products we examined offer inferior sun protection or contain worrisome ingredients like oxybenzone, a hormone disruptor, or retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A that may harm skin. And despite scant evidence, the government still allows most sunscreens to claim they help prevent skin cancer.” – EWG.org

I use only mineral sunscreen – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide offer safer protection from both UVA and UVB rays. I listed my other go-to rules for choosing a safe sunscreen here.

I use sunscreen on my face every day and depending on the activity and the weather forecast, I choose one of the following:

  1. Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer, Broad Spectrum SPF 30

20 % Zinc Oxide. I use this on days where I’m not going to be wearing much makeup and will be in the sun. I also put this on Ellie’s face every morning before preschool and she thinks it’s a special treat because it smells like oranges. It goes on super easily and doesn’t leave her (or me) all white.

A rich, non-greasy, “UV chemical-free” face sunscreen that offers Broad Spectrum Protection against damaging UVA & UVB rays. Infused with youth promoting antioxidants, this 3 in 1 product functions as a face moisturizer, sunscreen and make-up primer all in one. Hyaluronic acid, astaxanthin, red algae and Certified Organic: aloe vera, jojoba, sunflower, pomegranate, cucumber, and green tea help provide additional sun protection, moisture and hydration. Non-nano sized zinc-oxide not only protects the skin from the damaging UV rays, but it also soothes and calms the skin.

  2. Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Tinted Day Cream with SPF 30

I’m in love with this stuff!! The cream is light with a sheer tint and goes under makeup really well. It’s not greasy, oily or thick. I wear this most days and I use 2 small pumps to cover my face and neck.

A multi-action day cream performing as a rich moisturizer, an effective natural sunblock and light make up. Color adjusting earth minerals correct and brighten skin tone while plant oil and herbal infusion synergy transform and repair skin via anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, fatty acids and vital phytonutrients. This luxurious, lightweight cream works as a primer, prepping and smoothing skin before make up or alone for a moisturized and protected glow with a balanced, comfortable, smooth finish.

  3. Drops of Shade All-Natural Mineral Sun Protection

I use this liquid titanium dioxide as a sun protection booster. It’s highly concentrated and can be added to any daily moisturizer or makeup. I use about three drops to give me broadband protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

Customize your sun protection by simply adding a few Drops of Shade to your favorite moisturizer. Add more or less depending on your sun exposure ~ you decide what you need! Micro-particle Titanium Dioxide physically blocks the Sun, reflecting UV rays before they can cause your cells to release wrinkle and cancer-causing free radicals. Simple, yet effective formula reduces the risk of allergic reaction and will not leave any film or residue like most sunscreens. Our titanium dioxide is non-nano.

  1. I’ve been wanting to find an SPF to wear daily under makeup that is light feeling and not leaving me ‘white’, so thank you for your great suggestions! For days where I’m in the sun for hours, I wear Elta MD UV Physical Broad-Spectrum SPF 41 on my face, under my makeup, which I really like. For everyday use, I was trusting my mineral makeup SPF did the trick, but who knows? I love that the Drops of Shade can be added to my moisturizer!
