Monthly Baby Photos: Layla’s first 12 months

baby progression photos first year

Reaching the first year milestone is a BIG one, and I think every parent would agree. I describe it like a deep breath. We made it, we survived (mostly) unscathed, and we’re left with the confidence that “ok, we can do this.” The joke that the first birthday party is for the parents isn’t too far from reality. We deserve the celebration as much as anyone, am I right?

Another deep breath came from completing Layla’s monthly baby photos! Phew! They weren’t always easy to get, especially once she started rolling, crawling and walking.

At my baby shower, each of my girlfriends made a dreamcatcher and I’ve LOVED using them in each of Layla’s monthly baby photos.

I can’t tell you how happy I feel looking at all the shots together like this! I highly recommend doing monthly baby photos and I posted some other creative ideas here. Ellie’s are here too.

Below are a couple tips for taking a successful monthly photo:
  • Choose consistent elements in the same setting. I used a fuzzy blanket, printed monthly number, and dreamcatcher.
  • Have everything in the scene set before placing baby
  • Do a test shot with your camera to make sure lighting is good.
  • Use the same camera settings each month if possible. Makes editing a little easier.
  • Do the photo shoot at a time baby is most likely to be happy. For us it was right after her morning nap.
  • Get help. After month 4, I couldn’t do it by myself. Someone else had to be there to place her and keep her distracted ;).
  • Do it fast! All of the above pictures were snapped within 20 seconds of laying her down.
  • Bribe with snacks. See month 9? It was the only way. Month 7 she found her own snack.

not sure I’d use “helper” to describe Ellie but cute nonetheless

Gotta love the outtakes:

Does anyone enjoy monthly baby photos as much as I do?

XOXO

  1. What a cute idea! All of us new parents photograph our babies…but this is so smart…a picture at the end of each month. You can really keep track and compare growth that way.
Layla and Ellie are adorable. Now you’re on your way to that second birthday for Layla. Hope it goes by slowly and sweetly.

    1. Thanks Kate!! I love looking back and seeing what changed month to month and having the snapshot of a year in all of the photos together. And thank you, a slower second year would be a good thing!!! XOXO

  2. ETA I made a booboo…I meant to say 13 months through 21 months, not just 13 – 15.
That’s what I get for watching the storm outside and trying to compose a comment 😉

  3. These photos are adorable! As are both of your girls. You did a great job with this wonderful idea.
I, too have done this. My son will be 2 in October, and we have done/will do a monthly photo up to and including 24 months. We have finally come to the decision that he will be our only child, so we want to document as much as possible of his childhood.
I have found the recent months (13, 14, 15) to be the hardest to photograph. He is too wiggly to sit still long. Most of the time, 20 seconds is asking a lot! But we have captured some great monthly photos, as well as some sweet candid moments.
All in all, it goes by way too quickly.
Do you have monthly photos for Ellie’s first year? Perhaps I missed them on the blog or in Instagram. Anyway, if so, I bet they’re precious, too. Thanks for sharing this neat idea.

  4. The photos of Layla are precious…including the outtakes. And it must have taken time and patience to get those perfect shots.
We are expecting our first child at the end of October, and we are planning to to take many photos. Now I will add this monthly photo to the timeline. I’d never thought of taking a photo to commemorate each month’s growth, but you gave us a wonderful idea!
You can truly see baby’s growth and progression this way. I am so impressed and delighted with your idea. I will have ultrasound next month to determine our baby’s gender; I’m under 30 so it’s not a necessity. But I would like to go with gender in decor, colors etc. Right now everything is white, lol.
Belated happy birthday to Layla and many, many more. And Ellie is adorable, too!
