Essential oils for Labor and Postpartum

essential oils for postpartum

I’m 39 weeks pregnant today and thought it might be time to start getting things ready to pack in my hospital bag (second pregnancy much?), which includes essential oils of course!

Here are the blends I made today:

Peri-spray recovery was rough last time, I remember everything swollen and unrecognizable. I’m packing and planning on using this guy as much as I can!

  • 20 drops of helichrysum, 20 drops of Frankincense, 10 drops of Geranium, 1/4 bottle of Immortelle, fill with witch hazel and a little bit of fractionated coconut oil. Spray perineal area several times a day or add to a pad, wrap in foil and freeze to apply as a cold pack.

(Geranium and Helichrysm both support skin regeneration and the healing process. Immortelle is known to protect and nourish the skin while helping with inflammation, and frankincense does it all with its disinfecting, heating, anti-inflammatory properties.)

I used about a million of those witch hazel pads last time so I’m hoping the spray provides similar – or even better – relief.

Postpartum Blend this is really just a blend of soothing and uplifting oils since I had the baby blues for a good month or so post-delivery with my first. Hoping this happy blend keeps me just that way! I figure I can use it during labor as well to keep me going.

  • Approx 10 drops each of Elevation, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Calming Blend and Bergamot. Roll on wrists, feet, back of neck as needed.

Hand Sanitizer self-explanatory for all the handling of baby that will occur in the early days after she arrives.

  • Fill spray bottle with witch hazel, a little bit of fractionated coconut oil and 5 drops each of Lemon and Protective Blend essential oils. Shake before spritzing each time.

Clean Air – De-germ the air by spritzing this simple spray in the air.

  • Distilled water and 7 drops of Protective Blend essential oil. Follow everyone around the room and spray wherever they go and see how long it takes to annoy them ;).

I’m also bringing along Frankincense and Grounding Blend to apply to baby as soon as she’s born. 1 drop of Frank on the crown of her head and Grounding Blend on her feet and spine. I’ll be reaching for the Grounding Blend during labor as well I’m sure!

As always, let me know if I can help you get started on your essential oil journey. I don’t mind sending samples or talking through what I’ve found to work (or not). XO
